The Humble Potato
“The vegetable that changed the world.”
Potatoes are commonly consumed all over the world. They are a staple crop in many countries and even the basis of some cultures’ diets. But did you ever wonder where this humble vegetable comes from and how it became such an important part of our lives? In this short blog post we’ll dive into the history of the potato and explore just how it has changed the world.
Where did they come from?
The potato’s origin can be traced back to the Andes Mountains, where it was first domesticated over 7,000 years ago. The Incas cultivated almost 7,000 types of potatoes, and their farming techniques were so sophisticated that they built raised fields that allowed for better drainage in waterlogged soil. When the Spaniards conquered South America in the 16th century, they discovered the potato and brought it back to Europe. However, it took some time for it to become accepted as a food. In fact, for a while, people avoided it because it was a member of the nightshade family, which was believed to be poisonous.
It was only in the 18th century that the potato’s popularity began to spread across Europe. In Ireland, they became a staple crop for the poor, who relied on them heavily for sustenance. However, the over-reliance on potatoes eventually led to disaster when the Great Famine struck in 1845, killing over a million Irish people and prompting a massive wave of emigration to the United States. Nonetheless, potatoes continued to be popular, and today they are the world’s fourth-largest food crop after rice, wheat, and maize.
The potato (Solanum tuberosum) belongs to the solanaceae family of flowering plants. The extremely resilient crop that can survive harsh climates originated and were first domesticated in the South America’s Andes Mountains. Through a process of freezing and thawing, the people of the region transformed potatoes into a dish called chuño, similar to modern-day gnocchi that was used in spicy Andean stews.
The Spanish were intrigued by the strange food they encountered when they arrived in the region in the 1530s. Despite its initial lack of appeal, the Spanish quickly recognised the nutritional value of potatoes and used it to help power their conquest of the Incan Empire.
Potatoes were introduced to Europe by Spanish sailors in the 1570s. Farmers in the old world were initially sceptical of this new vegetable, with some even believing it caused illness. Despite initial concerns, the potato was eventually recognised as a miraculous source of energy that could help to sustain the working man.
The importance of this humble vegetable.
One of the most significant contributions of the potato to the world is its role in feeding the hungry. It’s easy to grow, nutritious, and delicious. In fact, it can produce more food per acre than any other crop, making it a valuable resource for impoverished and famine-stricken regions. The United Nations has even designated 2008 as the International Year of the Potato, recognising its importance in feeding the world’s population.
Aside from its impact on agriculture, the potato has also influenced cultures worldwide. Firstly, Potatoes or tatties as they are better known in Scotland have been a staple in Scottish cuisine for centuries, holding an important place in everything from hearty stews to classic fish and chips. Across the water in Ireland, potatoes are a crucial ingredient in traditional dishes such as colcannon and shepherd’s pie. America has French fries, tater tots, and potato chips. And in Peru, the potato is celebrated every February with a festival that showcases over 4,000 varieties of the vegetable.
